5 Ways to Save Money on Summer Travel

With the summer holidays fast-approaching, it is important to save money where you can. We’ve put together a few ideas to help you save money this season!

Starting with a weekend honoring our veterans, summer has quickly swept over us. This is a wonderful part of the year to spend time with friends and family, but with business slowing and expenses rising, you don’t want to get caught digging too deep in your pockets come the end of August. We’ve polled the office at LumpSum Funder and come up with several money saving tips that could help you have a bit more in your bank account by the end of heat season.

Purchase your travel tickets sooner than later!

At times it can be hard to pull the trigger and fork-over the dough for those pricey plane tickets, but the longer you wait, the higher travel fares will rise. Meet with your family and solidify some concrete plans and go ahead and make the purchase…it won’t get any cheaper. One important tip before buying tickets online is to clear your browsers cache and cookie files before you go to the company website you plan on purchasing tickets for. Sometimes they will see you’ve been shopping around and slightly rise the price to give you a sense of urgency!

Don’t be afraid to ask friends for rides!

However convenient it may be to drive to the airport, you should always first examine what other options are available to you. Overnight parking can add up quickly! Instead, don’t be afraid to ask a friend for a ride or examine what other public transportation options are available.

Be mindful of extra fees and exchange rates if traveling out of the country.

While most major airlines have been doing a better job of displaying once-hidden fees associated with each transaction, it is still a good idea to add an additional 5-10% to your final purchase to account for any unforeseen charges that may be tacked on after the fact. Also, if you are planning on traveling out of the country these holidays, make sure to check and see if there is any reciprocity fee associated with obtaining your travelers visa. The U.S. Department of State has an updated list of reciprocity fees.

Try and book your room at a family-friendly hotel.

Family friendly hotels are a great idea for saving money during the summer. Most national hotels geared towards accommodating traveling families have larger rooms for everyone to spread out and decompress. Also, there are almost always free continental breakfasts that you can take advantage of to save money on an entire meal for the family. Parents.com has put together a great list of family-friendly hotels for your convenience!

Before leaving on your road trip, load up on groceries!

If you plan on doing any long-distance traveling by car, you can save a huge amount of money (and time) by loading up on snacks and drinks at your local grocery store before you hit the road. As well as saving time and money, you can easily choose healthier options that aren’t available or are more expensive at gas stations, truck stops, and fast food joints.

The summer season is a perfect time for cooking out with neighbors and hanging out with friends. We hope that you are able to cash in on some of these hot tips from our team of annuity experts at LumpSum Funder!
